Can Crystals Go in Water? A Safety Guide by Stone

Can Crystals Go in Water? A Practical Safety Guide

The short answer: some crystals are perfectly safe in water, and some should never get wet. Whether a stone can be rinsed, soaked, or worn in the shower depends on two things — its Mohs hardness and whether it is porous or water-soluble. This guide gives you a fast, reliable way to decide, lists the common stones in each group, and shows the safe ways to clean a stone you would rather keep dry.

Why Some Crystals React Badly to Water

  • They dissolve. Stones made of salt or soft minerals (selenite, halite, calcite, malachite) can literally wash away or develop a chalky surface.
  • They rust or oxidize. Stones containing iron (hematite, pyrite, magnetite) can rust and crumble when wet.
  • They crack. Porous or layered stones (turquoise, lapis lazuli, howlite, malachite) absorb water, which can lead to staining, swelling, or breakage as they dry.
  • They're soft. Anything below about 5–6 on the Mohs scale scratches and pits easily in water, especially with movement.

Generally Water-Safe Crystals (Mohs 6+)

Quartz-family stones are the safest group because they are hard and non-porous. This includes clear quartz, amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, smoky quartz, and tiger's eye. Amethyst in particular is fine for a brief rinse of tumbled pieces. Agate, jasper, and most well-polished quartz bracelets also tolerate a quick clean. Even so, keep soaking short and dry the stone afterward.

Keep These Dry

  • Selenite, halite, calcite, malachite, angelite — soft or water-soluble; water damages them fast.
  • Pyrite, hematite, magnetite — iron content means rust and crumbling.
  • Turquoise, lapis lazuli, howlite, opal, fluorite, azurite — porous or soft; they stain, swell, or scratch.
  • Any raw, unpolished, or fractured stone — water seeps into cracks and weakens the piece over time.

How to Clean a Stone You Keep Dry

For the "keep dry" group, skip water entirely. A soft, dry cloth removes dust. To energetically refresh them, use a Selenite plate, moonlight, or sound — never a rinse. If you want a deeper clean for a hard stone, see our guides on cleansing with salt and running water, and always match the method to the stone.

Quick Decision Rule

If you cannot name the stone or its hardness, assume it is not water-safe. When in doubt, wipe with a dry cloth and recharge by moonlight. A 30-second check now saves a ruined piece later.

FAQ

Can I wear my crystal bracelet in the shower?
Only if it is a hard, non-porous stone like quartz or agate, and even then it is better to take it off. Soft, porous, or iron-containing stones should stay dry.

Is amethyst safe in water?
Tumbled amethyst (Mohs 7) is fine for a brief rinse. Avoid long soaks and keep geodes or raw pieces dry.

What happens if selenite gets wet?
Selenite is gypsum and will soften, pit, or begin to dissolve. Dry it immediately and keep it away from humidity afterward.

Can I use salt water on crystals?
Use caution — salt water is harsher than plain water and can damage many stones. Our salt-cleansing guide explains which stones tolerate it.
