How to Cleanse Crystals with Salt (Dry Salt Bed Method, With a Safety List)

Why Salt Is Used

Salt has a long history as a purifying substance across many traditions, and crystal practitioners use it to draw off accumulated or "heavy" energy from a stone. The key is to use a dry salt bed rather than soaking crystals in salt water, which can damage many stones.

The Dry Salt Bed Method

  1. Choose a glass, ceramic or natural-fibre bowl and add a layer of coarse natural salt (Himalayan or sea salt).
  2. Set the crystal on top of, or gently partly buried in, the salt — do not submerge it in water.
  3. Leave it for a few hours, or overnight if you feel the stone has been through a lot.
  4. Remove the crystal, brush off every grain of salt, and optionally rinse only stones that are water-safe.
  5. Discard the salt afterward; it is considered to hold what it absorbed.

Which Stones Should Avoid Salt

Salt is mildly abrasive and can affect porous, soft or polished stones. Use a gentler method—such as selenite, sound or visualization—for calcite, selenite, kyanite, angelite, malachite, lepidolite, moonstone and most polished jewellery. Hard, non-porous stones such as clear quartz and black tourmaline tolerate a dry salt bed well.

How Often

There is no fixed schedule. Many practitioners cleanse a new stone when it arrives, after someone else has handled it, or whenever the stone feels dull. See the note on how to tell when a crystal needs cleansing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use table salt to cleanse crystals?

Plain table salt works in a dry bed, but coarse natural salt is preferred; avoid iodized salt and never make a salt-water soak unless your stone is confirmed hard and water-safe.

How long do I leave crystals in salt?

A few hours is common, and overnight is fine for stones that have been used heavily; always brush off all salt afterward.

Does salt damage crystals?

Dry salt is safe for hard stones like quartz and tourmaline, but can scratch or affect porous or polished stones, which are better cleansed with selenite or sound.
